On the art\/life trail ride there is perhaps no more tangible and tremendous force than focus. What we focus on expands. We are in the midst of a difficult journey\u2026the art\/life trail is turning us inward and taking us down toward a critically needed reconnect…we turn toward our creative roots.<\/span><\/h4>\n

This week I completed a book by Jeanette Winterson \u2018Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?<\/u><\/em><\/strong> She can be trusted to know of what she speaks when she states:<\/span><\/h4>\n

Creativity is on the side of health _ it isn\u2019t the thing that drives us mad; it is the capacity in us that tries to save us from madness<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Winterson describes her own descent into and climb back out of madness. She tells us of her writing practice: \u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

What made it possible was the sanity of the book in the mornings and the steadiness of gardening in the spring and summer evenings. Planting cabbages and beans is good for you. Creative work is good for you.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

We are traversing the Introspection\/Death & Rebirth moon\/month. There\u2019s nothing like a good book about madness and the creative process to remind us of the importance, the critical need, to STOP the madness. Don\u2019t feed that demon.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Easier said than done<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

A miracle to behold<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

There is a test occurring and many will pass and many will fail and we learn more from our failures, some suggest, than from the platform and the medallion and the festive atmosphere of winning the big success.<\/span><\/h4>\n

In the art\/life take what you\u2019ve got and make it work\u2026work with it\u2026embrace it. The high\/low, up\/down, back\/forth, in\/out, dark\/light, sunlight\/shadow.<\/span><\/h4>\n

What\u2019s the contrast called in the art\/life? Ah, yes\u2026 chiaroscuro<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

Lines Written In The Days Of Growing Darkness<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Every year we have been<\/span><\/span>
\n witness to it: how the<\/span>
\n world descends<\/span><\/h4>\n

into a rich mash, in order that<\/span>
\n it may resume.<\/span>
\n And therefore<\/span>
\n who would cry out<\/span><\/h4>\n

to the petals on the ground<\/span>
\n to say,<\/span>
\n knowing, as we must,<\/span>
\n how the vivacity of what was is married<\/span><\/h4>\n

to the vitality of what will be?<\/span>
\n I don\u2019t say<\/span>
\n it\u2019s easy, but<\/span>
\n what else will do<\/span><\/h4>\n

if the love one claims to have for the world<\/span>

I recently watched a Sally Mann<\/a> documentary \u2018What Remains<\/a>\u2019 in which she explores the death process through the lens of her camera. She’s curious about and confronts the death edge\u00a0spurred on by events taking place on her farmland and in facing her husband\u2019s health issues. Her work is provocative and deeply connected to the earth. <\/span><\/h4>\n

Sense into how her\u00a0words..<\/span><\/h4>\n

“I never felt it necessary to leave home to make art.”<\/span><\/h4>\n
